Finding a Spiritual Director
Finding a spiritual director is itself an exercise in discernment. A director who may be just right for one person may not be for another. It is important to find a director that is right for you at this time of your life. Pray about it, ask your friends and your parish priest, or look at the list of directors on these web pages. If possible, interview a few candidates prior to making any decision.
When you are making an initial contact with a director, let them know what draws you to direction. Do you feel comfortable sharing your spiritual journey with them? Remember it is important to find someone with whom, over time, you might share all aspects of your life (the good, the bad, and the embarrassing.) Listen carefully for the way the Spirit is guiding you in your selection process.
You may want to ask your prospective spiritual directors about their formation and training, on-going education, and their current ministry of direction. Qualities to be looking for in your future director include the following:
Spiritual depth - Is this person growing in holiness? Is their spirituality attractive to you?
Good sense – Is this person well grounded? Do they exercise discretion? Are they a good listener?
Experience – What experience do they have as a director? How many years? With how many directees? (A person with little experience should not be ruled out. Each of our licensed spiritual directors must receive regular supervision and ongoing training as they grow in the exercise of this ministry.)
